01. “Women on Radio,” a play by Cristina Clemente
A full-length contemporary play. Translated and adapted from Catalan by Steven Capsuto through a grant from the Institut Ramon Llull. Performance rights available.
Women on Radio debuted in Spain at the Teatre de Salt in 2025 and toured Catalonia before settling in for its run at the Villarroel in Barcelona.
SYNOPSIS:
Three powerful stories. Three women facing adversity.
Rosa, a top-rated talk show host in her mid-fifties, has a sharp wit and strong personality. Ashley, a hospital nurse in her forties, is sensible and caring. And Carol, a twentysomething still trying to find her way in the world, is direct and uninhibited.
Three lives with nothing in common, until each of them finds a lump in her breast. Three lives turned upside-down. Three women who―with tenderness, sensitivity, and plenty of humor―describe their experiences since that discovery.
PRAISE FOR THE ORIGINAL PRODUCTION:
“**** Cristina Clemente has achieved something extremely complex that very few playwrights can pull off: writing a comedy rooted in a tragic situation without losing an ounce of sensitivity along the way… [The director] has approached the script as if it were… already a contemporary classic, which I have no doubt that Women on Radio will become, given the playwright’s strong following in Europe and Latin America.” –Time Out Barcelona
“A must-see entry in Barcelona’s theater season… The script’s vitality links it directly to real life.” –Món Terrassa
“Anyone familiar with Cristina Clemente’s plays will recognize the hallmark of her work in Women on Radio (which is a great title): a natural blend of drama and comedy, fueled primarily by human emotion.” –La Vanguardia
“It’s not easy to get laughs, entertain, and move an audience while talking about breast cancer… but Cristina Clemente meets the challenge in a virtuosic balance between comedy and drama.” –Ara (Barcelona newspaper)
